Cross-Centaur: Modeling Individual Decision-Making Across Psychological Tasks with Language Models https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.23157 [Introduction] In recent years, research on simulating human decision-making using artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced significantly. However, conventional models are limited to predicting "how an average population behaves in a specific task," failing to capture and utilize "individual behavioral tendencies (individual differences, such as being risk-seeking or cautious)" to forecast how the same individual would act across different tasks or contexts. In this study, we constructed a new dataset, "Cross-Psych-101," comprising multiple psychological experiments conducted with the same participants, and proposed "Cross-Centaur," a model that predicts a person's decision-making in another task based on their behavioral history in a specific task. Experimental results demonstrated that AI can learn an individual's behavioral traits and accurately predict their behavior even in unobserved tasks. [Abstract] In this study, we achieved cross-task decision-making prediction for the same individual using language models and experimentally analyzed the transferability of individual behavioral tendencies. To this end, we collected 12 types of psychological tasks across four categories (Bandit, Tradeoff, Structure, and Social) from 591 participants, constructing a new dataset named "Cross-Psych-101" (comprising 261,551 valid decision points). Using supervised fine-tuning, we trained "Cross-Centaur," a model that generates and predicts behavior in a target task based on a participant's behavioral history in source tasks and the description of the target task. Through analysis, we derived the following results: 1. Improved Cross-Task Prediction Accuracy: For unseen participants, Cross-Centaur achieved superior prediction accuracy compared to existing LLMs and Centaur, not only between tasks within the same category but also across different categories. 2. Contribution of Individual-Specific Behavioral Information: Ablation analysis using shuffled participant behavioral histories confirmed that matched behavioral data from the same individual is essential for accuracy gains, demonstrating that the model effectively leverages personal behavioral evidence. 3. Internal Representation Encoding of Individual Traits: Probing analysis of the model's hidden states revealed that task-general, transferable individual-level behavioral tendencies—such as risk preference and regret sensitivity—are encoded within Cross-Centaur's internal representations. The analysis demonstrates the feasibility of highly accurate human decision-making simulations in multi-task environments by leveraging individual behavioral evidence, offering a new framework for modeling individual differences in cognitive science and social simulations. Future work includes extending the approach from laboratory tasks to everyday and social contexts, achieving cross-lingual generalization, enhancing transfer accuracy across unseen tasks, and developing training methods that faithfully reproduce the breadth (variance) of individual differences without underestimating the diversity of human behavior. 本研究に関するお問い合わせ:info[at]riise.u-tokyo.ac.jp ________________________________________________________________________
